Keeping the Faith

Nominee: Kim K.

Kim is the the aunt of my husband, and the strongest and most positive person I have ever known. She desperately needs a raise.

A couple of years ago her husband, Steve, was diagnosed with cancer, and by the time they got the news, it was pretty progressive. Kim and Steve have full custody of their children—five in all, and all under the age of 16. Kim worked part time, while Steve worked full time. Eventually, Steve was no longer able to work due to the cancer. He lost his job, and with that, his health benefits. Kim was determined they would push through this tough time. She was so confident Steve would get better, and they could move on with their lives. Yet, his condition continued to worsen.

Kim drove Steve several times a week to a hospital about 30 miles away from her home to receive Chemo and radiation. She still managed to drop the kids off at school and pick them up in the afternoon. She still made sure her kids got to their after school activities, and tucked into bed at night. She still worked part time to make sure she could put food on the table and pay some bills. I still have no idea how Kim got so much done.

After traditional treatments failed, Kim then drove about 60 miles from home to a specialized cancer treatment center for Steve to receive experimental treatment. She continued to remain positive and hopeful for her children and her husband, even after she couldn’t pay the mortgage anymore, or pay all the bills. She wouldn’t let that stand in the way. Also, experimental treatment is not covered by insurance (which Steve didn’t have anyway). It was costing thousands of dollars a week in medical bills to try and save her husbands life, but Kim did what she felt she had to do. They fell further into debt because that was the only option in her eyes.

Presently, the outlook is very grim for Steve, but it is amazing that is has been about two years since the initial diagnosis—much longer than expected he would live. I am convinced it was the positive thinking and determination of Kim and Steve. If she was discouraged, she never showed it.

Things are just starting to get tough for her. Now, more than ever, she needs some good news. She hasn’t heard anything but bad news from doctors for two years now. Please help me give her good news. She will need all the help she can get to take care of her children and pay the bills when her husband is no longer here, and that could be any day now.
