Single Dad/Katrina Survivor/Caring Man
Nominee: Gregory R.
My 58 year old brother really deserves a raise. He’s a divorced, single father who sells insurance for several companies on straight commission . He lost his home & everything else due to Hurricane Katrina, 2005, & was forced to get another home for his family at a much larger mortgage payment. Now he’s struggling to keep up with his mortgage & may lose his home. He had to start over at age 54. In 2008, Hurricane Gustav damaged his current home & with insurance deductibles so high he had to pay for the damage himself causing more financial strains. Our Dad died when my brother was a year old & he had to learn how to be a good man without a Dad to help. He has always been there for family, especially for his Mom, a longtime widow who also had her home destroyed in Katrina. He also helped me too during my 3 battles with cancer. Times are hard & sales aren’t too good in South Louisiana where he lives at this time. Now, with the oil spill in the Gulf, his selling territory is in dire straights financially. His youngest child, a son, works as a waiter trying to earn money to go to a local college. My brother wants to help his son, but can’t at this time. A raise would help. Greg works very hard to sell insurance & he gives good advice & fair deals to his customers. Since he is considered self employed, his taxes & insurance are expensive too. He really deserves a raise; he’s worked since he was a teenager selling newspapers, donuts, pizza, whatever he could.
