The American Dream
Nominee: ahmad k.
After falling in love and marring my mother in Jordan, my father, being the oldest child to a poverty stricken family voyaged to America in hopes to better the lives of his parents, 13 siblings, and future family. After arriving to America, my dad found himself working many different jobs to support his family here in America and far in Jordan. He’s worked as a roofer, security guard, cashier, in gas stations, cafeterias, and where ever else he could find work, many times working 3 jobs at a time. He never stopped sending money to his parents and siblings. During these 11 years, four children later, my father still living in a small 2 bedroom rental, never stopped working days and nights only to receive very little pay, much of which was given to his now sick father and old mother to buy a home for them and his siblings. It was after this that my parents finally bought their first home in southwest Detroit. Soon after this my father became a licensed truck driver and earned a job at Faygo Beverages where he has been working for the last 9 years. Within these years, my father brought his widowed mother and his 7 youngest siblings to this country supporting them for the first year after their arrival. While working at Faygo, my dad took no sick days unless completely necessary. He even went to work with severally stiff neck. My dad is a loyal honest employee, always on time, and never complaining. 20 hard years in America, dozens of jobs, little pay, and one big stable healthy family to show for it all; my father considers himself a prime example of one living the American dream.
