Never Too Late to Dream
Nominee: Carrie B.
Everyone wants or needs a raise, right? Many people really do deserve a raise as well. Well I am nominating someone who not only deserves a raise, but deserves a salary for 20 years of unpaid work as a babysitter, housekeeper, volunteer, chauffeur, coach, psychologist, teacher, referee, groundskeeper, decorator, maintenance worker, personal assistant, nurse, laundress, bookkeeper… the list goes on. This sounds familiar to many women who “worked” as stay-at-home moms. What makes my nominee special are the sacrifices she made to postpone her career hopes and dreams in order to insure that her three children would grow up to be exceptional citizens and successful adults.
As a child, Carrie dreamed of working in broadcasting and television. She got her college degree but had to put her internship on hold in order to marry her college sweetheart. They married one month after graduation and Carrie took an office job to support them. Once they started a family four years later, Carrie became a full-time mother for 16 years. The more years that passed, the harder it became for her to enter a career field that favors youth. That dream of being in the entertainment field was becoming all that…only a dream.
In the meantime, Carrie volunteered her bookkeeping skills at her church, donated her time to managing her daughter’s soccer team, and dedicated her time to helping her children realize their dreams. She found a few ways to scratch her itch to work in her desired field by doing some community theater and volunteering to act in local student films. The last two years she has dedicated three nights a week volunteering her time and skills by helping develop a local TV show with the hopes that one day it would actually turn into a paying job. She uses her own resources and funds to keep the show going so that another 20 people can realize their dreams of becoming actors and entertainers. She “works” daily to help others in the community try to build the TV and film industry in their state so that more jobs can be created in a state that has the highest unemployment in the country.
My wish is that my nominee, Carrie, would finally get a much overdue paycheck for all the unpaid work she has done for 20 years as a mother, volunteer and entrepeneur.
