My Dad deserves peace in his golden years
Nominee: Melvin B.
I would like to tell you why my father deserves a raise.
Dad is 80 years old and worked from the time he was a teenager until the night of his 77th birthday, when he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke.
Dad was a Sergeant in the United States Army and fought in Korea, where he was injured and awarded a Purple Heart and a Gold Star.
After the Army, Dad met and married my mother, began a career in banking, and then my sister and I came along. Things went well for a while until the recession in the 70’s. Dad lost his job and took whatever work he could get until he was able to find another banking job. Mom also began working during this time to make ends meet for the family.
After several more years in banking, Dad was forced take early retirement. Again he took whatever work he could find - convenience store clerk, auditor for a furniture store, and finally night auditor for a motel. They lost their home and savings but were able to survive on their income.
After his stroke, although he recovered amazingly, Dad was no longer able to work. He gets a small retirement and his social security. Along with Mom’s social security they just barely make it month to month, but have had to rely consistently on a credit card which has accumulated a very large balance due.
It breaks my heart to see that after working so hard his whole life, he and Mom still have to worry about finances. These are their golden years. They have earned the right to have a peaceful, comfortable life. $40,000 would do that for them. Currently they live in a small apartment that isn’t suitable for their physical restrictions. With that money they could pay off the charge card and move to a retirement community with wheelchair accessible entrances and rooms.
My Dad is a good man. A great man. He served this country. He worked to provide for his family and is a wonderful father. He did everything he should have but suffered a few knocks here and there which he overcame as best he could. He deserves to live out his years without stress and worry. He deserves a raise.
