DR. BRUCE, THANK-YOU FOR ALWAYS PUTTING STUDENT'S FIRST!
Nominee: Bruce W.
Along with many other students at my college, I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to go to a health care provider I can always trust and count on to keep me alive, active, and healthy. I would like to nominate Dr. Bruce, who works in the student health center at the college I attend, to receive a raise.
Dr. Bruce consistently goes above and beyond his job basics, making sure my fellow students and I are doing well physically and emotionally on a regular basis. Whether meeting in person, writing e-mails, or talking by phone, Dr. Bruce always makes the effort to listen to and answer all my questions and concerns no matter how many times I ask them. I was never turned away when I needed his help, whether it was a routine exam or getting through struggles of life. Dr. Bruce was always there.
A major life changing event happened during my college years that left me numb inside wanting to die. I faced a situation of inappropriate sexual advances by a trusted person which shook me to the core. I woke up every day with the feeling that life was not worth living. The flashbacks/memories of the situation haunted me daily. It was unbearable and all I wanted was the pain to stop. I got involved in self-destructive behaviors to try to control and release the hurt that was inside. It was then I realized I needed help. I spoke to Dr. Bruce about my situation and he was willing and ready to help. He didn’t condone or judge my self-destructive/self-soothing behaviors but led me to the development of healthier ones. It didn’t happen overnight or in a few months because he didn’t want to teach me behaviors that were like band-aids which just cover pain, but rather strategies versatile enough to help deal with life’s trials to help me fully enjoy my life again. Dr. Bruce inspired me so much to persevere in life that I in turn am inspiring others as an educator and counselor.
Dr. Bruce contributes not only to students in his office, but also reaches out to students on campus. He is often visible and available during campus events, finals week, and even has been a guest speaker in classes. He is an awesome motivator, story teller, friend, and healer. He is very student-oriented and views each student as an individual.
Dr. Bruce also makes a difference in the work environment by inspiring those around him. He is positive, upbeat, calm, and gentle. As I sit in the waiting room and listen to other patients or even co-workers speak of him, it is always with the highest respect. The whole staff is very warm and friendly, which only a great leader can inspire!
I believe Dr. Bruce deserves a raise because he sacrifices so much expecting nothing in return but the well-being of others.
